Bale predicts top-four finish

Tottenham midfielder Gareth Bale says his side can secure a top-four finish this season, following their 4-0 demolition of Liverpool on Sunday.

Harry Redknapp’s side were rampant at White Hart Lane, as goals from Luka Modric, Jermain Defoe and a second-half double from Emmanuel Adebayor brought Spurs their fifth victory in a row at home against the men from Merseyside.

The result leaves Tottenham three points behind the Champions League places at this early stage of the season with a game in hand – a position which Bale is confident his side can achieve by the end of the campaign.

“There are no doubts in the changing room that we can finish top four. We showed there today even when Liverpool had 11 men, we were attacking them,” Bale said.

“We showed that against Wolves last weekend and in patches against (Manchester) United and Man City. We’re all confident in there we can get in the top four and I’m sure we will.”

“There’s a lot of teams. I think there’s always one surprise team that’s up there, and the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, they’re always up there.”

“But it’s always good to get the first home win. Home form is important for the rest of the season, and if we win most of our games here, we’ll definitely be up there challenging.”

“We know it’s not going to be easy, we know it’s going to be a long hard season, and we’re prepared for it.”

Adebayor scored twice on his home debut, a feat the Togolese striker will hope will banish any animosity over his ties with arch rivals Arsenal.

The clash also saw a White Hart Lane debut for Scott Parker, and Bale was quick to praise the role of both players in Sunday’s victory.

“Adebayor played amazing and scored two goals – that’s what you ask for from your strikers. He and Defoe have struck up a good partnership and hopefully they can continue doing that,” he added.

“He’s a great character, he gets along with everybody and he’s lifted the spirits and the place. On the pitch he does what he does. He can play the ball on the floor, in the air, score goals, and that’s what we needed.”

“Parker’s a leader, I think he shows that on the pitch. He’s quite aggressive and he plays with his heart on his sleeve. He rallies us up before games and gets us motivated. They’re two great signings for us and I think they’ve shown that on the pitch already.”
