German midfielder Michael Ballack will not be signing a contract with Sydney, after the A-League side captured former Feyenoord player Shinji Ono instead.
The former Germany international, who has been a without a club since leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season, was recently linked with a switch to Western Sydney Wanderers.
However, after the Australian club announced the signing of Japanese midfielder Shinji Ono, it is now clear that they have opted against bringing Michael Ballack to the club.
Namely, according to Australian Association rules, the A-League clubs can only sign one international player per season.
The 36-year-old has so far been unsuccessful in the search for a new club, despite being linked with New York Red Bulls, Montreal Impact and a number of clubs from the Far East.
The highly rated midfielder was expected to easily find a new club after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in June, but it appears that the high wage demands prevented Ballack from returning into action.
