Aston Villa have suspended midfielder Barry Bannan while they conduct an inquiry following the midfielder’s car crash early Tuesday.
The 21-year-old was travelling with Shrewsbury Town striker James Collins – formerly of Aston Villa – when they were involved in an accident on the M1 at about 5:30am before being arrested for suspected drink-driving.
The club confirmed Bannan will not be allowed to play while the investigation is on-going and will therefore be missing against Sunderland on Saturday.
Following the incident, Villa manager Alex McLeish said in a media statement: “Barry Bannan has been suspended while the club carries out internal enquiries into allegations which arose last weekend.”
“He will not be available for this weekend’s game at Sunderland.”
The Scotland international has played eight times in the league for Villa this season, including four starts.
