Marc Albrighton has backed team-mate Barry Bannan to put his drink-driving ban behind him and continue to impress in an Aston Villa shirt.

Bannan was convicted after he was involved in a motorway crash whilst under the influence of alcohol, but Albrighton is confident his team-mate’s ability on the pitch will soon out shadow the negatives in his personal life.

Albrighton told the club’s official website: “He was eager to take his punishment and then get on with playing football. That’s what he lives for.”

“He’s had some great support, the lads have been right behind him.”

“He knows what he’s done, nobody needs to tell him, he’s received his punishment and now he just wants to get back to establishing himself as a top-class footballer. And he definitely will do.”

“He is so talented on the ball, he’s got it on a string and sees pass after pass.”

“He’s got a special talent which not many players have. He sees things – opportunities – before others and it’s not just about seeing it, he can execute it too. He has that ability in him.”

“He will be back showing his top form and flying soon this season.”

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish also hailed the reaction of Bannan, who combined with West Midlands Police to help with their festive road safety campaign.

“Well done Barry. It wasn’t so well done what he did. But he has showed great regret about the incident and he wants to get on with his life now,” McLeish said.

“He has fronted up. He has said sorry. He will hopefully concentrate now on being a good footballer.”

“He is a terrific little player and he has to now totally concentrate on trying to be the best he possibly can be.”
