After Frenkie de Jong, set to join Barcelona in the summer, played a huge role in Ajax’s destruction of Real Madrid’s hope of retaining the Champions League trophy for the fourth consecutive year, Barca fans were ecstatic seeing their future player dismantle their arch-rivals.
And club president Josep Maria Bartomeu took another step in delighting the supporters by confirming that Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt was also on their radar.
Bartomeu revealed that the Catalan club’s policy is always to monitor players of such talent, and openly told SER Catalunya that the name of de Ligt was on the table.
As was the case with de Jong, Barca will have a tough task of beating off stiff competition from a number of top European clubs, including Liverpool whose Virgil van Dijk partners de Ligt in the Dutch national team, but they believe that performing on the biggest club stage might be more important for the young centre-back.
