Ivan Rakitić’s current contract with Barcelona was signed in March 2017 and it’s set to run until the summer of 2021. However, last summer there was strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain in his services, and as a result, he demanded a new deal at Nou Camp, one that would see his wages rise significantly.
There have been talks during the season, but no new deal has so far been put on the table and Jordi Mestre has indicated that there wouldn’t be one either.
Speaking to Sky Sports, as relayed by Sport, the Barcelona vice-president said that they were very happy with the 31-year-old Croatia international and his contribution, and suggested that they wouldn’t be offering him a new deal because he’s already got one, which also implies that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave either.
Quite apart from the likes of Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal, Barcelona have several younger central midfielders who have proven their worth this season in Arthur and Carles Alena, while they’ve also secured the services of Frenkie De Jong from Ajax. It seems they simply don’t see the point of giving Rakitić a new deal, especially with the current one binding him to the club for two more years – until he’s 33.
