Barca won’t pay €70m for de Jong

Sky Sports have relayed a report from Radio Catalunya that Barcelona are reluctant to meet Ajax’s demands over the transfer fee for Frenkie de Jong, which according to them amount to a staggering figure of €70million.

It certainly does seem an awful lot for a 21-year-old midfielder from the Dutch Eredivisie, talented though he undoubtedly is. On the other hand, the Catalans’ failure to secure his signature this summer was always going to raise the price, especially with Ajax now playing in the Champions League which enables them to showcase his quality to other potential suitors.

Even though de Jong has expressed his preference to move to Camp Nou, their reluctance to pay the asking price will likely open the door to other possible destinations. Indeed, Manchester United, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have all been credited with an interest, and Barcelona may have their work cut out for them before too long.
