Three weeks ago, a report emerged in the Spanish press that Frenkie de Jong had agreed to move from Ajax to Barcelona next summer, and that the fee the Catalans would be paying for his services was the only thing left to resolve. Now, however, Marca claim the La Liga title holders are worried the transfer might still fall through.
The outlet quotes an unnamed Barcelona official in saying, “He says with words that he wants to come, but not with actions”.
The concern comes from reports by media in France who are close to Paris Saint-Germain. Apparently, they in turn believe the 21-year-old has already committed his future to the Ligue 1 champions, and the Catalans obviously don’t like what they hear. They fear the youngster’s head would be turned by PSG offering wages too high for them to match.
However, Barcelona haven’t given up yet, and they are still keen of pairing up de Jong with Adrien Rabiot, whose contract with PSG expires at the end of June.
