Barca’s Afellay joins Olympiakos

Dutch midfielder Ibrahim Afellay has joined Greek giants Olympiakos, Barcelona have revealed on their official website.

The 28-year-old arrives in Athens on a season-long loan, while it is important to note that his deal at Camp Nou is due to expire at the end of the 2014/2015 campaign.

Afellay joined Barcelona from PSV Eindhoven in January 2011 as one of world’s hottest prospects but a serious knee injury marred his career at Camp Nou.

As a result, the former Netherlands international only made 21 league appearances for the Catalans, whilst featuring in 10 Bundesliga games during the loan spell with Schalke.

Afellay has now been given an opportunity to kick-start his career at Olympiakos and with his contract expiring in a year’s time, there is no doubt the midfielder will be playing for his future this season.

Not so long ago, the attacking midfielder was an important player in the national team and he currently has 5 goals in 44 caps.
