Barcelona challenge Juventus for Axel Witsel

Spanish media outlet Don Balon understands that La Liga champions Barcelona have entered the chase to sign Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel from Zenit.

The highly rated footballer is believed to have agreed personal terms with Juventus, but there has been no official confirmation, meaning that the player is free to negotiate with interested clubs.

According to Don Balon, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique hopes to sign Witsel on a free transfer at the end of the season as he lacks cover for Sergio Busquets.

The problem is that the Belgian would probably find his first team chances limited at Camp Nou, meaning that Juventus remain in pole position.

It has been clear for a while now that Witsel will not be extending his stay with Zenit, and a January exit is a realistic possibility even though the Bianconeri are not prepared to match the current asking price.

Juventus and Barcelona both have title ambitions in this year’s Champions League, with Barca priced at 3/1 at the moment.
