Barcelona are on the verge of reaching an agreement for Uruguayan midfielder Kevin Mendez, according to Catalan daily Sport.
The 17-year-old is widely regarded as one of South America’s hottest prospects, and he has caught the eye of Barcelona scouts playing for Uruguay Under-17 side last April.
The Catalans have since continued to monitor the player’s progress and they are reportedly set to make their interest concrete in the coming days.
Mendez has yet to be handed his professional debut for Penarol, but he could easily leave the club without making a single appearance for the senior side.
Sport has suggested that Barcelona are close to reaching an agreement with the midfielder’s current employers worth €6 million.
The Catalans are determined to wrap up the deal before Under-17 World Cup kicks off later this month as they expect Mendez to play a key role in United Arab Emirates, which could see more high-profile clubs join the race for his services.
