Barcelona are keeping close tabs on Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio, reports El Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalans are looking at a number of high-profile defenders as they look to rejuvenate their aging back line.
And according to El Mundo Deportivo, Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio is one of the names on their hit-list.
Barcelona boss Tata Martino was spotted speaking with the player after the weekend’s match at Camp Nou, which could suggest the manager is interested in luring his compatriot to Catalunya.
Musacchio produced another superb defensive performance while also scoring a goal against the Catalans, so it is hardly surprising he has caught the eye of some top European clubs.
Given that his current deal is due to expire in June 2014, the 23-year-old should be regarded as a definite purchase.
Villarreal currently sit two points behind fourth-placed Athletic Bilbao, and they can be backed at 15/8 for a top 4 finish.
