Barcelona join race for Benatia

Catalan daily newspaper El Mundo Deportivo understands that Barcelona are showing interest in AS Roma defender Mehdi Benatia.

The Catalans have drawn up a list of potential replacements for Carles Puyol and the Moroccan’s name was recently added to the list.

However, prizing Benatia away from Stadio Olimpico is likely to prove a very difficult task given that he has quickly developed into a key player for the Giallorossi.

The 26-year-old was signed in the summer from Udinese and he enjoyed a brilliant start to his career at Roma.

Benatia not only helped the team concede mere 12 goals in 26 league matches, but also proved to be a real danger for opposition defenders, having bagged 5 Serie A goals.

As a result, he has been linked with Manchester United and Barcelona, and it remains to be seen if he will be leaving the Giallorossi after just one season. Roma host Benatia’s former club Udinese on Monday, with home win paying 4/11.
