Barcelona are closely following Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, according to El Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalans failed to sign a new centre-back in the summer transfer window, but are likely to revive the search in January.
El Mundo Deportivo claims the Catalans have made Montpellier star Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa their number one target.
The French international was one of just two Montpellier players who had permission to leave the club in the summer, but the French club ultimately rejected approaches from Milan and Arsenal.
The player later revealed he had been keen on a switch to Milan, but the deal fell through as the Rossoneri failed to meet the asking price.
It is now almost certain that Mbiwa will leave the club either in January or next summer, with Barcelona and Milan the most likely destinations.
One of the reasons why the 23-year-old is held in such high regard by top European clubs is that he already has five Ligue 1 seasons behind him.
