ESPN has reported this morning about speculation that Barcelona could make a move for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen.
The Gunners centre back – who has become a popular figure at the Emirates – was spotted with Barcelona defender Carlos Puyol, leading to rumours about his future.
Rumours doing the rounds suggest that Barcelona are in the market for a centre back too, so Vermaelen has emerged as a possible target for the La Liga club.
Despite being given the chance to quash such rumours, Vermaelen’s agent didn’t exactly reject the claims of a potential move.
Kees Vos simply said: “It is two world-class defenders in the same restaurant.”
However, last month, The Mirror reported on how Vermaelen was keen to ‘stay at Arsenal forever’. Therefore, it would be a significant turnaround if he then decided to leave this summer.
As ever, this is only speculation for now and it will be interesting to see how this one develops.
Elsewhere in Arsenal related transfer news, the Daily Mail is reporting that Robin Van Persie is set to travel on the team’s pre-season tour despite constant speculation linking him with a move.
The Gunners are still confident that the Dutch forward will sign a new deal this summer.
