The Barcelona board has confirmed what the Spanish newspapers have been reporting for about a fortnight. Vice-president Mark Ingla said yesterday that the Catalan club has opened talks with Arsenal regarding the signature of Alexander Hleb. However, the Barcelona official went on saying that his club is not willing to pay over the odds for the Belorussian winger.
“Barcelona’s negotiations with Hleb are still in progress.” Said Mr. Ingla, according to BBC.
“But despite him being a player with special qualities, if his club are not ready to sell him, we have other options in mind.”
Hleb joined Arsenal from Stuttgart in 2005 for a transfer fee of about £11 million and only has one year left on his contract. Should Arsenal not sell him this summer, they risk losing him on a free transfer just like Matthieu Flamini.
