Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt, who has been linked with Barcelona before, has once again appeared on their list of targets. That’s according to Sport, who claim the Catalan giants are seriously searching for a quality backup option, possibly a long-term replacement even, for Gerard Pique.
Apart from the experienced Spain international who has come under some serious criticism recently, Barcelona haven’t got a single right-footed centre-back in their squad and this has become a growing concern for manager Ernesto Valverde. The issue has become even more burning since departure of Yerry Mina on loan to Everton.
De Ligt is a physically dominant player who reads the game extremely well, and he’s comfortable when using either foot to control the ball. He is also very strong in aerial duels. His price currently stands at €50million, but it’s likely to go up as the interest in his services mounts.
Barcelona’s plan to sign the 19-year-old doesn’t affect their ongoing pursuit of Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
