Sky Sports have quoted their own sources in reporting that Gareth Barry has triggered a 12-month option to extend his contract with West Bromwich Albion. However, it remains to be seen whether the experienced midfielder will want to take the option up.
West Brom currently sit bottom of the Premier League with just 20 points from 32 games to their name. They have recently dispensed with the services of manager Alan Pardew. Craig Shakespeare and Nigel Pearson top an early list of potential replacements at the posts.
The Baggies trail Crystal Palace in 17th place by 10 points at the moment, with 10 league games of the season remaining to do something about it. It certainly looks like their days at England’s top flight are numbered, and the 37-year-old Barry will have to make a choice between ending his career as a Championship player and attempting to secure employment at one of the clubs to remain in, or get promoted to, the Premier League.
