Abel Tador, the captain of Bayelsa United football club, has been shot dead by armed robbers just hours after leading his club to a first-ever Nigerian league title.
Bayelsa clinched the Nigeria championship after they held hosts Warri Wolves to a 2-2 draw in Oleh on Sunday.
But after the match, Tador, a 24-year-old defensive midfielder, was shot in the head while driving to his family home.
“It is rather painful to have lost such a player on a day when we ought to be celebrating our historic league win,” said Bayelsa United chairman Victor Baribote.
Bayelsa finished top of the 20-team championship on 70 points, three points ahead of closest rivals Heartland FC of Owerri.
The final day of the Nigerian season also saw four teams relegated from the premier league – FC Abuja, Nasarawa United, Lobi Stars of Makurdi and JUTH of Jos.
