Bayer fightback stumps McClaren

(GSM) – Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren was at a loss to explain his side’s collapse after they threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

McClaren’s side, and not for the first time, relinquished a comfortable lead at the VW-Arena to come away empty-handed leaving the English coach at a lost for words, yet again.

“That is incredible, but this is football. It is a funny old game,” he said. “It is the second time this has happened to us and that is very bitter. We controlled the game, but then a couple of minutes turned the game around. I will only be able to explain it when I get to see the match once again.”

Wolfsburg were beaten 4-3 by Mainz earlier this season after leading 3-0 and yesterday’s loss, after cruising at 2-0, saw them miss out on the chance of breaking into the top five.

“It is a puzzle,” said McClaren. “We have got to show character and a reaction in our next game. We still have a lot to learn.”

Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes praised his side’s belief for coming back into and winning a game which looked lost.

“It was a strange game,” he said. “But I am very happy. At the end of the day, we are the lucky winners. My team has learned this season never to give up and, after we got our first goal, we all had hope.”
