Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes was delighted with his side’s display in their 2-0 Champions League victory over Manchester City on Tuesday.
A first-half brace from Mario Gomez earned the Bundesliga giants a comfortable win, and they were in cruise control for most of the match.
Heynckes said City were a tough opponent but stressed his side were too good for their English visitors.
“The whole team played completely flawlessly in the second half, and Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger were simply world class tonight,” he said.
“At the beginning we were very nervous, but the players recovered the situation during the first half. We played against an outstanding team, but we dominated them in the second half.”
“Altogether, it was a very cohesive performance by the team.”
With Bayern currently topping both the Bundesliga and Group A – the ‘group of death’ – in the Champions League, the 66-year-old coach praised the work ethic of his team.
“Currently, we not only have super team spirit but also play in a very harmonious way, handle space very well and deploy outstanding individual players,” Heynckes said.
“We can be very pleased. These were stronger opponents than the teams we have faced in the Bundesliga so far.”
“I have analysed how the team played last year. The many goals conceded meant that something was not right. You could see today that tactical discipline in defending was there. We are always capable of scoring.”
Bayern top Group A in the Champions League with six points from two games.
