Bayern can show ´how good we are´ after Champions League exit, says Kompany

Vincent Kompany says Bayern Munich are ready to show “how good we are” by bouncing back from their Champions League exit to Inter.

Bayern crashed out at the quarter-final stage on Wednesday after playing out a 2-2 draw at San Siro in the second leg, as they were unable to overturn the first leg deficit, losing 4-3 on aggregate.

While their hopes of clinching the European trophy are over, Bayern are still in a strong position to win the Bundesliga, with the Opta supercomputer giving them a 98.7% chance of clinching the title.

They hold a six-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the league with five games remaining, and Heidenheim are next up for the leaders.

Bayern lost their first-ever Bundesliga away game in Heidenheim 3-2 after leading 2-0 last season – the last team they lost their first two top-flight away matches against was Freiburg in 1993 and 1994.

Bayern have lost only two of their first 29 Bundesliga games this season (W21 D6), though, a first for them since 2016-17 under Carlo Ancelotti.

They have already claimed more points away from home this season (31) than they did in the whole of 2023-24 (29).

Kompany is confident his side can quickly put Wednesday’s result behind them by switching their attention to the title race.

“We want to use everything we can use so that we’re better in the next match,” Kompany said.

“I’m naturally very motivated and hungry. I don’t need much to be back with full energy again the day after.

“It’s best that we’re playing so quickly again. The absolute priority is what we do in the next 90 minutes against Heidenheim.”

Kompany also confirmed that Bayern are still without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is still out with a calf injury despite travelling with the team to Inter in midweek.

Bayern already have a long list of injured players, which includes midfielder Jamal Musiala, defenders Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito and Sven Ulreich.

And they have been dealt another blow ahead of their meeting with Heidenheim, with Leon Goretzka set to miss the game with a calf injury he picked up in training.

“Leon Goretzka will be out of the match against Heidenheim after sustaining a calf injury,” Bayern said in a statement.
