Bayern Munich are stepping up their efforts to sign Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay from Benfica, O Jogo has learned.
The highly rated centre-back is widely tipped to leave Estadio da Luz this summer and he was believed to be on the verge of joining Zenit St Petersburg.
Nevertheless, O Jogo understands that other teams are keen as well, with Benfica hoping to sell to the highest bidder.
The same source has suggested that Bayern Munich are showing serious interest in the player as they look set to stay without Daniel Van Buyten.
Ezequiel Garay has seen his stock rise a great deal since joining Benfica from Real Madrid and he has so far made 78 league appearances for the Eagles, scoring a total of 9 goals in the process.
The 27-year-old has cemented a starting berth in the national team and is expected to star at the 2014 World Cup, where Argentina are 9/2 to win outright.
