This World Cup promised so much from some of the world’s best players.
Yet most of those high-profile stars have failed to perform. The likes Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres have all struggled to make an impact in South Africa.
Overshadowed
Those big name stars have been outshone by German pair Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The Bayern pair have been two of the stars of the tournament in South Africa. Without the duo the Germans wouldn’t have progressed so far in the tournament.
Not much was expected of the young Germany side but they have made it through to the semi-finals with a stunning 4-0 victory over Argentina. Schweinsteiger and Muller both played a key role in the victory.
Schweinsteiger controlled the midfield, just like he did against England. He has been converted successfully from a left-winger to a central midfielder this season and he suddenly looks like a world-class talent.
The 25 year-old has always been a good player but has never been seen as world-class. People are now reconsidering their opinion of the player. When he first broke through into the Bayern side he was expected to become a superstar and he may now be on the verge of that status.
Schweinsteiger has been linked with a £25million transfer to Premier League champions Chelsea this summer. His value may just have gone up by a few million after his performances for Joachim Low’s side. He would be the perfect sort of player for the Premier League. He has all the attributes to make it in England’s top flight.
Youngster
Youngster Thomas Muller has made just seven appearances for his country and scored four goals. He only broke into the Bayern Munich first team on a regular basis last season. He helped his club claim the Bundesliga title and domestic cup.
He also helped Bayern to the Champions League final and missed a crucial chance in their 2-0 defeat by Italian champions Inter. However that miss has been quickly forgotten and his rise to fame has been quite incredible.
He only made his international debut in March, ironically against Argentina but he is now considered a key member of the German international side, thanks to his superb displays in South Africa.
Unfortunately for Germany and for Muller he will miss the semi-final against either Paraguay or Spain, after he picked up his second booking of the tournament against Argentina. He will be a major absentee. The 20 year-old has become vital in the German’s counter-attacking style and will be hard to replace in the semi-finals.
Teamwork
The Germany team is made up of good individual players, who all play together as a team. That teamwork has seen the very young German side progress to unexpected heights. Schweinsteiger has become the leader of the side.
Driving his side forward, using all his experience to help his younger teammates. Despite being 25 he has a huge amount of experience at international and club level. This experience has become crucial in a team with an average age of just 24 years of age.
Winners
Germany has produced some top class performances in South Africa and deserves to be in the semi-finals. They have shown a refreshing attitude towards the game. Even when they have been two or three goals up against the likes of England and Argentina they have pushed forward wanted to add to their lead.
I hate to say it but Schweinsteiger, Muller and their team really do deserve to be world champions, just for the fact that they actually want to play attractive football. If Germany does win the trophy then they will have been rewarded for their brave and incisive football. The German football revolution has begun and Schweinsteiger and Muller are at the forefront of that revolution.
