Bayern Munich have confirmed a deal has been agreed to sell striker Mario Gomez to Serie A side Fiorentina.
The forward’s future has come under scrutiny with Gomez looking for a new challenge, and the Florence club soon emerged as favourites to seal his signature.
And Bayern have now confirmed the 27-year-old, who joined the Bundesliga champions from Stuttgart in 2009, is heading for Italy.
“It was the desire of Mario Gomez to leave Bayern Munich to Florence. We have now complied with his wish,” chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told the club’s official website.
“He has made a major contribution to two German championships and two DFB Pokal victories. The highlight was of course the Champions League victory and winning the treble last season.
“I would like to thank him for the performance he has brought to Bayern. On behalf of Bayern, I wish him luck and success in Florence.”
The Germany international started just nine games league games last season for Bayern after missing the start of the season with an ankle injury, but he managed to score 19 goals in all competitions.
Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer had said on Saturday that Fiorentina would have to meet the player’s asking price, while new manager Pep Guardiola was happy for Gomez to remain a part of the first-team despite speculation on his future.
The Italian club are looking to add to their squad after a fourth-place finish in Serie A last season saw them narrowly miss out on a place in this season’s UEFA Champions League to Milan on the last day of the season.
