Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig played one of the most anticipated Bundesliga fixtures of the 2019-20 season, as these teams entered the round in first and second place of the standings, respectively. The match was quite tight, however, and neither side was able to take advantage of the other. As a result, everything ended with a scoreless stalemate.

Here are three things we learned from this thrilling Bundesliga encounter.

Bayern Munich should have won this game

Bayern entered this game in a thrilling run of form and many experts believed they were the better side. They did nothing but confirming that notion here, as they should have won the game rather easily. Die Roten dominated the game throughout, and they were on top during most of the contest. The statistics don’t lie. Bayern registered more possession (69% against Leipzig’s 31%), more shots (11 to nine), more shots on target (three to one) and more corner kicks (11 against three).

Leipzig’s regression continues

Leipzig have reached four straight games without a win in all competitions (D2, L2) and they could be in line to see their title chances fade away for good. They still sit in second place of the standings with 42 points, and they are just one point behind Bayern and three above the third-placed, Borussia Dortmund. But their recent form hasn’t done them any favours. And if we also consider they will play in the UEFA Champions League during the next few weeks, then Leipzig at some point must choose what to do.

Who was the best player in this match?

Undoubtedly, the Man of the Match was Leipzig’s centre-back Dayot Upamecano. The Frenchman has always been considered a target for some of Europe’s best clubs, and he showed why in this game. He limited the impact of Robert Lewandowski, and showed an unusual maturity for someone who’s only 21 years old. But he has made 17 starts already this season. His progress over the last 12 months has been noticeable, and he showed it in this game.
