Lyon took a huge step towards Champions League semi-final qualification after a 2-0 victory away to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The record eight-time European champions travelled to the Group C runners-up for the first leg of their quarter-final tie having won Group A with a 100% record.

This match soon became another routine victory for the French side, who got ahead through Tabitha Chawinga in the 35th minute of the match.

The Malawi international had capitalised on a mistake from defender Linda Sembrant, allowing her a free run at goal.

Lyon had a golden chance to get further ahead in first-half stoppage time after Ellie Carpenter was fouled in the box by Sarah Zadrazil, who was booked for the challenge. The decision was checked by the VAR, but it confirmed the referee’s on-field decision.

Lindsey Heaps was unable to convert from 12 yards though, with Mala Grohs saving the spot kick.

Heaps did have a hand in Lyon’s second goal when it came, though, latching onto a long ball over the top before squaring for Melchie Dumornay to stroke home.

Lyon comfortably saw the remainder of the match out, though Amel Majri will perhaps feel disappointed not to have extended the lead further with a chance in stoppage time at the end of the game.

The visitors will now take a two-goal lead into the home leg next Wednesday. The winners of the tie will face either Real Madrid or Arsenal in the semi-final.

Data debrief: Comfortable night for Lyon

Lyon generated 2.61 xG from 19 efforts on goal during the match, compared to just 0.82 xG from their hosts after 12 efforts and one on target.

Following the result, Lyon have now kept six clean sheets in their last seven Champions League games – more than any other team in the competition this season.

They have also netted 21 goals in this season’s competition having scored in all seven of their matches thus far.
