The new Bundesliga season is underway and while you can never determine what’s going to happen before it’s actually taken place, many fans believe that Bayern Munich winning the title once again is a foregone conclusion at this stage.
They certainly took a bit step towards proving that would end up being true when they played Schalke on the opening day, as they hit eight past their top flight counterparts. Today, we’re going to take a look at five things that we’ve come to learn about both clubs in the wake of this utter demolition.
Just too good?
Everyone knows that Bayern are streets ahead of most teams in Germany, but you could probably use Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig as the exceptions. While this game didn’t see Bayern go up against either of those two teams, the utter embarrassment that Schalke experienced will probably leave many Bundesliga sides wondering what they need to do to get a result against them.
Schalke troubles
It’s going to be tough to take on Bayern Munich at any stage of the season, but Schalke really could suffer from a defeat like this. They looked utterly broken by the time the fourth or even third went in, to the point where they clearly didn’t even believe that they needed to try. They could still break into the top half but it’ll take one hell of an effort.
Eyes on the UCL once again
Winning the UEFA Champions League is one thing but being able to retain the title is a whole other ball game. Still, with the momentum that Bayern are currently carrying, you’d have to imagine they will be looking at the UCL as their main priority this season. Whether or not they’re capable of overcoming some of Europe’s elite again, though, remains to be seen.
Gnabry renaissance
Serge Gnabry was once told West Bromwich Albion are too good for him – now he’s one of the best players in the world and the Baggies are already on a one way trip back to the Championship. His hat-trick further proves that he is far, far better than most give him credit for, and the sky really is the limit for him.
The Super Cup awaits
The next test for Bayern Munich will see them go head to head with Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup. They’re currently priced as clear 4/11 favourites with Betfair to win the game and add another piece of silverware to their collection, and who can deny them of that? It’ll be a fun game, but Bayern are the kings right now.
