Another night of Champions League action has been and gone with Bayern Munich being the ones who came out on top in their time with RB Salzburg. Of course, saying that they ‘came out on top’ is probably the biggest understatement of the year, given that they put a real beating on the Austrian side – 7-1, to be exact.

It ensured they went through 8-2 on aggregate, booking their place in the quarter-finals of the competition in the process.

Lewandowski masterclass

Robert Lewandowski was, unsurprisingly, on fire once again last night as he scored a hat-trick – to go nicely alongside an assist late in the game. The Polish forward continues to prove that, like a fine wine, he seems to only get better with age. It’s nights like this that prove why he’s such a commodity and prove why he is so often described as unplayable in the media, and by those that play with and against him.

Salzburg collapse

RB Salzburg may be the kings of Austria but on this night, they were reminded of how far they still have left to go at this level. They came into the second leg at 1-1, knowing that a 0-0 draw would be enough to see the tie go through to extra time. That was always going to be easier said than done against a team of Bayern’s stature but even so, they seemed to fold completely after the first couple of goals flew in.

“All or nothing” mentality

A lot of papers within the Bavarian media described this as an all or nothing game for a Bayern side that is desperate to replicate their 2020 European success. It wasn’t even close, in the end, and we saw why within the first half hour in Munich. They were absolutely relentless and if they are able to carry that approach forward into the quarter-finals, they can beat just about anyone left in the draw.
