Bayern Munich travel to Switzerland on Wednesday hoping to book their spot in the Champions League group stages.
The Bavarian giants take a two-goal lead into the second leg against FC Zurich, after winning the first leg at the Allianz Arena 2-0 thanks to goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben.
Bayern dominated the first leg and perhaps should have gone into the rematch with more of a lead, which gives the Swiss side a fighting chance on Wednesday.
And Schweinsteiger is aware that despite the two-goal lead, the tie is still well and truly alive.
“We still need to survive in Zurich,” Schweinsteiger said.
“We know what can happen if we go one behind over there and the crowd gets on our back, so we need to be careful and make sure we’re fully focused.”
“It’s not going to be easy in Zurich and we can’t afford to relax. But I’m an optimist and Bayern belong in the Champions League.”
Croatian striker Ivica Olic will miss the match after tearing his right hip flexor, and he is expected to miss at least two months of football.
Robben and Mario Gomez are both in doubt for the match after picking up knocks in the side’s 5-0 rout of Hamburg on Saturday.
For Zurich, a 2-0 loss to Neuchatel Xamax on Saturday did little to boost their confidence.
But they still have faith and Zurich defender Mathieu Beda believes his side are still alive.
“There’s always a chance,” Beda said.
“We’re playing at home in front of our own fans and if we approach the game with confidence, then we can still achieve something with the quality we have.”
“We’re at our best when we get forward quickly and combine, but unfortunately we were unable to show that in the first leg and we’ll have to improve that for the second.”
