Bayern show thrills Heynckes

Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes was delighted with his side’s opening Champions League win over Villarreal on Wednesday.

The Bavarians looked in total control in Spain to claim a 2-0 win and take an early advantage ahead of Group A rivals Manchester City and Napoli, who drew 1-1.

An early goal at El Madrigal from Toni Kroos set the German side on track before new signing Rafinha consolidated the lead after a host of missed chances from the visitors.

Heynckes, who managed Real Madrid to Champions League glory in 1998, said his side had backed up their 7-0 Bundesliga thrashing of Freiburg well, but admitted the Champions League was a whole different domain.

“We can all rejoice after this match,” said Heynckes.

“We could of course have wrapped this up earlier. But the Champions League is not the Bundesliga, it is a lot tougher.”

“We have a great bunch of players who can be very proud of themselves.”

Disappointed Villarreal boss Juan Carlos Garrido rued the early goal his side conceded.

“Coming so quickly it affected us physically, tactically and psychologically. We committed two errors and then they scored straight from it,” bemoaned Garrido.

“Bayern were more comfortable in possession and had too much space.”

“We tried to get back into the game but then with the second goal there was no way back and we are left with the impression they were a lot better although I do not believe it was the case.”

Bayern sit top of Group A and will host Manchester City in Munich in two weeks’ time, while Villarreal face a tricky test at Napoli.
