Bayern Munich are waiting on the fitness of winger Arjen Robben for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Manchester United, while Germany striker Mario Gomez is set to return.
Robben appeared as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 Bundesliga defeat against Stuttgart, but the 14-goal winger suffered a recurrence of a calf strain late in the game.
“Perhaps it’s not very serious, but it’s seems it will be difficult for him to be available for the game against Manchester United,” said Bayern coach Louis van Gaal after his side suffered a second successive league defeat.
“Even so, we hope he will be able to play.”
Bayern host English champions United in the first leg of their quarter-final and a decision on Robben’s fitness could be taken as late as the day of the game.
“He?s feeling a lot better than yesterday,” reported club captain Mark van Bommel after speaking to his fellow-countryman.
Meanwhile, Germany international Gomez looks to have recovered from rupturing a calf muscle three weeks ago and took part in training on Sunday.
He is likely to begin on the bench against United, but may be an option for the starting eleven.
“I?m ready,” said Gomez, after staying out for extra shooting practice.
The 24-year-old last played for Munich in the Champions League fixture away to Fiorentina on March 9.
