(GSM) – Ajax have confirmed Bayern München have made an approach to sign their Holland defender Gregory van der Wiel.
Van der Wiel is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe, having featured in all the matches for the national side at the World Cup.
A number of clubs in England have been linked with the 22-year-old, but Bayern are hoping to steal a march on their rivals by luring Van der Wiel to Germany.
Ajax said in a brief statement Bayern had made an approach for Van der Wiel, but that there was no agreement yet between the two clubs.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also confirmed the club’s interest in Van der Wiel, but said Bayern are in no hurry to bring him to Munich.
“We are looking at things now and will discuss them again with the coach,” said Rummenigge. “Theoretically, we have until August 31.
“Sometimes one has to pursue things with great calm so that they don’t become too expensive.”
If Bayern can agree a deal for Van der Wiel he will join Holland team-mates Arjen Robben and Mark van Bommel at the Allianz Arena.
