Bayern Munich head coach Hans-Dieter Flick has revealed that the Bundesliga champions had Timo Werner and Kai Havertz on their shortlist of targets before the duo signed for Chelsea last summer.
Frank Lampard, who did very well in his first season in charge at Chelsea despite having to work with no signings after the departure of Eden Hazard, was backed heavily by the club in the transfer market last summer. Apart from Werner and Havertz, who cost the club a combined fee of around £120 million, the London Blues signed winger Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, as well as defenders Ben Chilwell from Leicester City and Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain.
Lampard obviously failed to get the best from the additions to his team which lead to his sacking and the appointment of Thomas Tuchel in his place in January. Since then, Chelsea have done extremely well and haven’t lost a game yet.
Speaking in his press conference following Bayern’s qualification to the Champions League quarterfinals, Flick said the club were seriously considering Werner and Havertz, but eventually opted for Leroy Sane instead.
