Bayern Munich left-back Diego Contento has rejected the chance to play for Germany as he wants to wait for Italy.
The 20-year-old rejected a call from Germany Under-21 side and Oliver Bierhoff believes the matter is now closed.
“We do not force any player to represent us,” Germany team manager Bierhoff told Italian media.
“For example, Contento is available for the German side as he was born in Germany, but he decided not to and on Tuesday turned down the call from the Under-21 international side.
“This is because he wants to play for Italy. In emotional and cultural terms, he feels more a part of your country.”
