Bazin new PSG club president

Paris Saint Germain’s majority shareholder Sebastien Bazin was named the new club president on Tuesday to succeed previous boss Charles Villeneuve.

Bazin, who injected his capital into the top French first division club in 2006, has entrusted the presidency to three people — Alain Cayzac, Simon Tahar and then Villeneuve, before now taking on the role himself.

“The board has asked me to take on the presidency of the club and I have accepted,” Bazin said, adding Philippe Boindrieux had accepted to become the new director general.

Bazin’s new role comes after two weeks of off-pitch controversy at the club.

Villeneuve demanded new powers and pointed out poor management in mid-January, resulting in the board’s mass resignation and his isolation from club officials.

In contrast, PSG’s on-pitch performance has been good of late and they are still going strong in four competitions.

Paul Le Guen’s team are third in the league, play in the French League Cup semi-final on Wednesday, and are still going strong in the French Cup and UEFA Cup, Europe’s second-tier competition.
