Franz Beckenbauer has labelled Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery ‘a phenomenon’ on the back of his goals in Sunday’s win over Schalke.
Just a few days after turning in a disappointing display against Basel in the Champions League, the France international netted both goals as the Bavarians returned to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph in the Bundesliga.
Beckenbauer was enthused by Ribery’s performance, and said that the winger’s heroics against Schalke underlined that he is best deployed on the left-hand side.
“He’s a phenomenon,” the former Germany international told tz-online.
“How can it happen that he runs so much? His style of play is such that it should be exhausting: he is constantly in duels.”
“And it was seen that so many attacks went down the left. This is a sign that it’s where he plays best.”
“He does decidedly more running on the left as opposed to the right.”
Beckenbauer also took some encouragement from the performance of midfielder Arjen Robben, who has not been at his dynamic best of late.
“There were a couple of situations where he tried to bring his team-mates into play when it would have been better for him to try to finish himself,” he said.
“But he is an experienced guy and he will find the middle ground again soon.”
Bayern sit second in the German top flight, four points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund, and take on Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
