Beckenbauer ´loses some confidence in FIFA´

Franz Beckenbauer, a member of FIFA’s executive committee, said Tuesday he has lost some confidence in football’s governing body after Russia and Qatar were awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively.

At the start of this month, Russia beat England, Spain-Portugal and Netherlands-Belgium to win a ballot of FIFA’s 22-strong executive members in Zurich for the rights to host the 2018 World Cup.

Qatar then saw off bids from South Korea, Japan, Australia and the United States for the 2022 tournament, but Beckenbauer says he was disturbed after details of the voting were later leaked.

“I have less confidence in FIFA,” the German legend told daily Bild.

“I’m disappointed how FIFA handled things after the voting.

“The seven losers were all left in disgrace. Especially England and Australia.”

England won only two votes out of a possible 22, while Australia picked up just a single vote, prompting a huge media backlash by the British media over the failure of the English bid.

Beckenbauer is set to stand down from the executive committee next March, but he says FIFA’s conduct in the wake of the decisions has left a bad taste in his mouth.

“The executive members were told that neither us nor the public know the exact number of votes,” he said.

“We were only told after each round of voting, which countries were left.

“And then I hear a couple of hours later on the radio, which countries received which share of the votes.”

@Cularfin, with all respect, Qatar fully deserves a good insult. I mean, they’ve never even QUALIFIED for a WC, and they sure ain’t gonna until they 2022 comes around, and that’s not qualifying, it’s getting an automatic invite. The US, Australia, South Korea, and Japan all deserved to have won hosting rights, because they belong at the big stage. Russia, too, so nothing wrong about them winning the host rights. But I smell under the table payments from Qatar. . . . it will be very ironic if the US wins the 2022 WC, a tourney they honestly had every right (along with the other bidding nations who have taken part in the tourney) to host in the first place, before Qatar sneaks it away.

I know I sound like a sore loser, but last time I checked, excluding 1930 and 34, the hosts had already played and shown at least some of their worth in hosting.

can someone please enlighten me to what is his point in saying all those ?? Why is it a big deal that England got only two votes ?? When can people respect FIFA’s decision on the matter and what bothers me is, all this rant is an insult to the countries who won. This would be the first time Russia and Qatar to host a world cup, people should be happy about this coz those people living on those hemispheres will experience what it’s like to host such an event.
