Beckham says no to Everton move

LA Galaxy star David Beckham has quashed the idea of making a guest stint with Everton in the English Premier League this season.

Moyes was quoted on Saturday as saying he would love to have Beckham at Goodison Park as a replacement for Australian Tim Cahill, who will be involved in the Asian Cup over the next couple of months.

However Beckham, speaking after the Galaxy’s entertaining 2-1 friendly loss to the Newcastle Jets on Saturday night, said he was far from match fit and that his ties with his former club Manchester United were too strong to play for a rival club in the EPL.

“Right now I am just getting my body back into shape,” Beckham said. “I was out of the game for six months with a pretty serious injury and I came back really quickly and I think I am feeling the effects of the month and a half that I played since I got injured.”

“But it is always nice to be wanted and it is always nice to have options out there.”

“I have always respected David Moyes and the time I played with him at Preston North End and I respect him as a manager.”

“I have spoken to Landon (Donovan) about him and he can’t speak highly enough of him as a manager and as a person so it is nice to be wanted but I am a Man United fan at the end of the day it is pretty close rivals there so I don’t know.”

Beckham played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle even though he went into the match under an injury cloud.

“I normally probably wouldn’t have played, but I think when a game like this comes up you want to play, in every game,” he said.

“I am sure there are many players in our team who feel the same way. If you ask Landon that he has played many times hurt before.”

“Tonight was tough just getting myself fit for it because I hadn’t trained since we last played which was over two weeks ago.”

“But besides the back pain I enjoyed the game – the majority of the time I was pain free but it just when I kicked the ball certain ways or ran certain ways.”

“It is obviously disappointing going into a game hurt but I enjoyed the game.”

The former England captain is now on his way to Zurich for last-minute lobbying for England’s 2018 World Cup bid but said he was divided in his support for who should win the 2022 bid.

“I said earlier in the week Australia hosting a big competition like the World Cup they could do that,” he said.

“But I am living in the US so I think the US would also be amazing at hosting a World Cup again.”

“They did it before and it was successful then and like I said the game is growing in the US and I think it would be very good there as well.”
