Belgian Cup: Standard Liege 2 Westerlo 0

Standard Liege has ended their season on a high with a 2-0 Belgian Cup win over Westerlo on Saturday.

The match came just four days after Standard threw away their chance of winning the Belgian First Division, having conceded a late equaliser on Tuesday to allow Genk to claim a 1-1 draw and the title.

But Dominque D’Onofrio’s men must have used the slip-up as motivation as they came out firing at the Stade Roi Baudouin in Brussels.

French defender Eliaquim Mangala, who scored the goal that looked to have won Standard the title on Saturday, found the back of the net again after 34 minutes to give his side a deserved lead.

Having had their hearts broken against Genk, there was no way Standard would play with any complacency and they quickly embarked on a search for a second goal.

That goal did come just after the half-hour mark, when Westerlo’s Bosnian defender Adnan Mravac put the ball through his own net.

Westerlo boss Jan Ceulemans made changes to his side as he chased the match, but his men could not find a goal to revive the contest and slumped to their first defeat in 16 matches.

Standard have also been in brilliant form, having lost just one of their last 18 matches to end the season.

The victory was the club’s sixth Belgian Cup win, but their first in 18 years.
