Anderlecht maintained a one-point buffer atop the Belgian First Division league standings with a 2-1 win over Zulte-Waregem on Sunday.
Marcin Wasilewski – returning to form after the horrific leg break he suffered in August 2009 – gave the reigning champions the lead three minutes before half-time, only for Zulte to hit back through Remi Mareval on the hour mark.
Zulte striker Ernest Webnje was sent off with 10 minutes remaining and Anderlecht frontman Romelu Lukaku scored the winner two minutes from the final whistle to keep his side’s one-point advantage over Racing Genk, who scored a 1-0 win over Germinal Beerschot.
Genk midfielder Marwin Ogunjimi scored the only goal of the game after 68 minutes to ensure his side kept up the pressure on the league leaders.
In Sunday’s other game, sixth-placed Club Brugge enjoyed a thrilling 4-3 home win over KVC Westerlo.
Dieter Dekelver gave Westerlo the lead after nine minutes, but Brugge hit back through strikes from Ivan Perisic and Vadis Odjija Ofoe to be 2-1 up after 21 minutes.
Dekelver levelled for Westerlo seven minutes later and Lens Annab put them 3-2 up after half an hour, but Nabil Dirar equalised for Brugge five minutes before the break to close a pulsating half of football.
The second half was less dramatic, with both sides putting a greater emphasis on defence. It was Brugge who broke the deadlock, thanks to a another strike from Perisic on 74 minutes to claim all three points for his team.
