Belgian First Division wrap: Genk draw, Zulte off mark

Champions Genk were held by Lierse, while Zulte Waregem recorded their first win of the Belgian First Division season on Saturday.

Franky Vercauteren’s men could not break through at the Herman Vanderpoortenstadion in a less-than impressive performance after their win over Beerschot on the opening day of the season.

The match was soured further for Genk with midfielder Kevin De Bruyne – reportedly on the radar of English Premier League outfit Chelsea – breaking his leg in the dying stages of the clash.

Elsewhere, Zulte Waregem recorded their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over OH Leuven.

First-half goals from Thomas Matton and Macedonian striker Aleksandar Trajkovski put the hosts 2-0 up before forward Jordan Remacle’s 81st-minute consolation strike.

Cercle Brugge and Mons played out a 1-1 draw at the Jan Breydelstadion.

Portuguese forward Rudy put Cercle Brugge up on the hour mark but they could not hold out as striker Jeremy Perbet levelled with 12 minutes to play.

Beerschot needed a 70th-minute equaliser from Senegal international Ibrahim Sidibe to take a 2-2 draw at home to Gent.

Uruguayan defender Gary Kagelmacher put Beerschot ahead from the penalty spot on six minutes, but they went into the break behind.

Slovenian Zlatan Ljubijankic and veteran midfielder Bernd Thijs had the visitors ahead before Sidibe’s late strike.
