St Truiden defeated Club Brugge 2-1 in the Belgian First Division on Sunday, while the match between KV Mechelen and Zulte-Waregem finished goalless.

St Truiden were unfancied heading into the match against last season’s runners-up but they took the lead 15 minutes in through Senegal’s Ibrahima Sidibe.

Club Brugge hit back through Moroccan Nabil Dirar just before the hour mark and with neither side seemingly able to find a breakthrough, the contest appeared to be heading for a draw.

Cue the intervention of former KVC Westerlo man Wim Mennes, who made himself the hero on the day for St Truiden, grabbing the winner two minutes before the final whistle.

The surprise defeat leaves Club Brugge in eighth place, already 13 points behind defending champions Anderlecht.

Hosts KV Mechelen and their visitors, Zulte-Waregem, shared a point apiece after neither side was able to find a breakthrough at the Derriere les Casernes Stadium.

A point gained sees Mechelen climb above Cercle Brugge and into sixth place, while Zulte-Waregem remain 11th.
