Belgium not taking Scotland lightly

Thomas Vermaelen insists Belgium’s World Cup qualifying clash with Scotland on Tuesday night will be anything but a walkover.

The Belgians currently sit top of Group A with seven points after a dominant 3-0 win over Serbia, while Scotland sit second from bottom after relinquishing a one-goal lead to fall to a late defeat against Wales.

But the Arsenal defender is adamant he is expecting a tough encounter with a Scottish side boasting several experienced Premier League players, such as Steven and Darren Fletcher.

“It’s not going to be easy because they have some good players who play in the Premier League. They have a lot of experience,” Vermaelen told Sky Sports.

“We got a massive three points on Friday and we want three points on Tuesday as well.”

There have also been reports that Chelsea new-boy Eden Hazard could be left out of the team to face Craig Levein’s side, but the Gunners captain insists the squad remain firmly behind their star man.

“Everyone knows his (Hazard’s) qualities. I am really happy he is with the national team, it doesn’t mean he is playing badly,” he added.

“Maybe that lack of team unity was the problem in the past but at the moment the shape of the team is better and we are getting the results.”
