Portuguese giants Benfica are hot on the trail of Boca Juniors midfielder Marcelo Meli, according to the player’s official representative.
The Eagles are set to stay without a number of high-profile footballers, with the likes of Nico Gaitan and Eduardo Salvio widely tipped to leave for greener pastures, and they are now on the lookout for potential replacements.
O Jogo understands that Benfica are keen on Boca Juniors starlet Marcelo Meli, with the Eagles already submitting an official proposal.
The Primeira Liga side are set to face stiff competition from Corinthians, another side that made the bid for the 22-year-old footballer.
Meli’s agent Fernando Hidalgo confessed to Radio America that Benfica and clubs from Brazil are showing interest in his client.
“Benfica (scouts) came to see Meli and the representative gave a positive opinion,” Hidalgo told Radio America.
“Now we wait for more contacts,” said the agent, adding that “there is also a possibility of the player going to Brazil.”
Marcelo Meli joined Boca Juniors from Colon last summer and he impressed at the start of his career at La Bombonera, making 20 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
