Bent’s transfer to Villa a strange one

Aston Villa has completed the £18million transfer of Sunderland striker Darren Bent.

The 26 year-old has signed a four and a half year deal with the club from the Midlands. The deal seems strange to me on a few levels.

Massive

Bent told the clubs official website: “Aston Villa is a massive club and as soon as I knew they were interested in signing me I wanted to join.

The size of the football club and the history of the club are major reasons for me coming here.

“There are some top, top players here too, real quality, and I’ve been able to speak to the manager and the chairman about their ambitions for the club, so I’m very excited about being a part of what we hope to achieve.”

History

So Bent claims he is joining a massive club. I don’t know if he’s looked at the Premier League table recently but Villa are dangerously closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League spots.

They have been a top team in recent years under Martin O’Neill but under Gerard Houllier this season have struggled. It’s going to take a while for Villa to return to being a top six team. However I can’t see them returning to that regular top six spot in the near future.

Gamble

Sunderland however is a club on the up and are sixth in the Premier League table. Season by season they have been improving and their owner Ellis Short is very ambitious. Selling their star striker and main goal source is a major gamble by the North East side.

Darren Bent has scored eight goals in the Premier League this season and seem to struggle for goals without the England striker. Mackems boss Steve Bruce must have reluctantly agreed to sell the striker because I can’t see the Sunderland board going above his head.

They may have made a profit on the striker but they will now have to do without him. One upside for Bruce and Sunderland is the fact that they Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan, who is a very able replacement.

Money

Another thing that surprised me about the deal was that Villa actually had £18million to spend. In the summer American owner Randy Lerner refused to give Martin O’Neill financial backing to strengthen his squad. O’Neill subsequently quite his position as boss.

I’m sure O’Neill would have welcomed £18million to spend on a striker and I’m sure they would be in a better position today. I can only assume the money that Houllier has spent on Bent must be part of the money received for the summer sale of midfielder James Milner to Manchester City.

And if rumours are to be believed the club could be about to part company with winger Stewart Downing, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. Villa doesn’t exactly strike me as a megarich club.

Mistake

I believe that Darren Bent has made a huge mistake by leaving Sunderland. He was very much loved on Wearside and enjoyed hero status amongst the Sunderland fans. The grass isn’t always greener and a move to Aston Villa isn’t exactly a step up and could maybe even a step down currently.

Darren Bent tried to step up to a bigger club when he moved to Tottenham from Charlton. And he struggled to get regular first team football at Spurs; a move to Sunderland re-ignited his career. He owed Sunderland a lot and he has paid them back by stabbing them in the back.

Was Darren Bent right to move to Aston Villa?

I think we need to realize that Bent is working and not having fun. It is of no use to stay in 1 team and be the greatest while u end up with nothing. If he invest well, score few more goals than out of form Rooney, then it no problem. If the Black cats valued him so much, they could have increased his wage. After all, the goal he scored against City proved to be the positive turning point. What ever happen later, he has re-written history by always scoring for each team he play for – should i say on his first game.

dang, Bacon310, that’s something to come out with!

I just wish Bent came to Old Trafford. City and everyone else should have no qualms as they’ve been too busy buying themselves.

Slight correction to the above statement:

“Since 2005 Bent, has scored 81 league goals, with only Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba ahead of him in the scoring charts, both with 82.”

Darren Bent is the 3rd highest scoring player currently still playing, and only a few behind Rooney and Drogba. I think he’s the perfect signing for Villa (though a little expensive!) and just what they need to start pushing them up the table.

I do however wish that the money had been given to O’Neil at the start of the season as i think they’d be in the top half if he was still there.

You’re damn straight about being happier than a supporter of Liverpool! I think firing Roy was a horrible decision and now on the verge of selling Babel!?!? I don’t understand! I am very angry, you are very correct Tom. You’re lucky to be outside of this horrible whirlwind.

Darren bent is simply a greedy man. He will now earn 20grand a week more at villa. Will he regret this in 5 months time???? And in the club statement of an 18 million on a four and a half year deal is a joke. Should be 18 million until I decide I want more money and yeah everything he said today we heard 18 months ago

Of course not like barca (I can only dream of that!) but certainly a bigger club than Sunderland with a richer history.

With players such as Ashley Young, Stuart Downing and the emerging brilliance of Mark albrighton. Villa have been the face of up and coming English talent for the last couple of years. Villa park is a regular haunt for a Mr Fabio Capello because he knows that talent is coming from the club.

Are we far behind Spurs and Man city? I don’t think so? Certainly even with our league position I feel happier than many supporters of the ‘massive club’ that is Liverpool Fc

Hi Tom, I never said Villa wasn’t a big club. I just said they were struggling this season and I couldn’t see your side returning to the top six anytime soon.

Can you really say that Aston Villa are a massive club? Barcelona are a massive club, Real Madrid are a massive club, Manchester United are a massive club.

Villa are a decent size club who have done ok over the last few seasons, until this season.

Maybe he wanted to be at a club where his mother wouldn’t be racially abused.

Maybe he can look past a clubs temporary form to look at their standing in the premiership over many years.

Maybe he likes to go out without having his car constantly damaged by nearby toon fans.

Villa not a bigger club?? Top 6 last 3 years. Fa cup finalists and carling cup last year. Half a season down and only Milner the real loss does bot suddenly make Villa a poor side.

Houllier has made some poor decisions in changing things too quickly but with players working in the same direction and extra quality up front now. It won’t be lobg before we are challenging champ league again. Maybe not season, but next.
