West Bromwich Albion chairman Jeremy Peace has revealed the club have no intention of selling star striker Saido Berahino during the January transfer window.
The England Under-21 international, who was banned from driving for one year after pleading guilty to drink driving last week, has scored nine goals in 22 English Premier League appearances this season and has reportedly attracted the interest of Liverpool.
“This unfortunate episode has been unsettling for the club generally and Saido specifically,” West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace told the club’s website.
“The club takes seriously the charges to which Saido pleaded guilty and as a result he will be subject to the club’s disciplinary procedures.
“What has been pleasing for everyone around the club has been the clear sign that Saido has responded positively to the arrival of Tony Pulis and a new coaching team and is displaying clear signs of showing that where it matters most – on the pitch.
“Tony has certainly been delighted with him and it is heartening for everyone to see a young man moving forward in the right direction again. We have always looked after him and we are all genuinely pleased to see such encouraging signs that he is back on track.”
West Brom (5-7-10), currently sitting in 14th-place in the Premier League table, have yet to receive any bids for Berahino depsite reports suggesting Liverpool are set to make a £20 million bid for the 21-year-old striker.
“I said in the autumn the club had no interest in selling Saido and that remains the case,” added Pearce.
“Unless Tony decides otherwise, the view will surely be that he is far too important to us to consider trading. His goals are capable of keeping us in the Premier League and would be hugely difficult to replace.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify the position and the club’s thinking to our supporters now that Saido can put this unhappy chapter behind him.”
Tottenham accept Swans’ £5m bid for Naughton
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly accepted Swansea City’s £5 million bid for versatile defender Kyle Naughton.
Naughton, 26, is negotiating personal terms with the Swans, but a deal is expected to go through this week.
The 26-year-old, who joined Spurs from Sheffield United in 2009, found himself on the outskirts of the first-team following the arrival of new manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has already signed two new full-backs–DeAndre Yedlin and Ben Davies– since arriving at White Hart Lane.
