Manchester United’s bid to retain their Premier League and Champions League crowns suffered a fresh blow on Friday when Dimitar Berbatov was ruled out of action for two weeks.
An ankle injury means the Bulgarian striker will miss Sunday’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa and both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against FC Porto.
United are already without suspended trio Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Paul Scholes for Sunday’s match against Villa, which will see Sir Alex Ferguson’s side attempt to put their title defence back on track following back-to-back defeats by Liverpool and Fulham.
“It’s probably going to be another two weeks,” Ferguson said of the Berbatov injury. “Hopefully he will be back training with us at the end of next week and he will be okay after that.”
Berbatov has scored 13 times in 33 appearances for United since joining from Tottenham for 30 million pounds in August.
