Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has revealed that he is frustrated with life at the club and wishes to move on this summer.
The Bulgarians’ contract expired this summer but United exorcised a clause in his deal to extend it by a year.
This gives United a chance to recoup a fee for the striker.
Limited
Berbatov’s chances in the United first team was very limited last season. He still managed to score nine goals in 21 appearances. However, he was behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Unhappy
The Bulgarian revealed his unhappiness via his Facebook page writing: “Because I am tired of speculation, I am telling you this. I read the papers and I see they say £10million is my price.
“I go and talk with Sir Alex, and he says to me £5million. So who is telling the truth, what do you think? And the truth is, I love this club, but I am not going to be useful to anyone, if I am not playing.
“And I want to play, I want to help. But for unknown reasons it’s not going to happen, or my chances will be limited, so it’s better for everyone if we say goodbye. If not, I am professional and I will keep doing everything I can, to help my team and my team-mates, whenever I have opportunity to do so.”
Move
It sounds to me that Berbatov is now facing up to life elsewhere and is accepting that he no longer has a future at United. A move to a top club wouldn’t be out of the question for the former-Tottenham striker. French nouvre-riche PSG have shown an interest in the striker in the past and could re-ignite that interest this summer.
However, the team from the French capital look to be close to signing AC Milan’s star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a big money deal. The pair are quite similar in their style and I don’t think PSG would sign both players. If the deal for the Swedish international falls through, the French club could be back in for Berbatov.
Talented
It’s not surprising that Berbatov is frustrated at United. Over the past few seasons he played less games than the other strikers, despite being arguably the most technically gifted striker at the club. He has technical ability that few players have in the game today.
Unfortunately his languid style has him labelled as lazy. Yet, Berbatov is a tried and tested match-winner. On his day there is few better strikers in the Premier League. He hasn’t been allowed to show his talent consistently enough though and it must annoy him, never frustrate him.
Unlucky
I don’t think that Dimitar Berbatov has ever recovered from being left out of the Champions League final squad to face Barcelona in 2011. Berbatov was the Premier League’s top scorer that season and in the PFA Team of the Year, yet was still left out of the squad for the big event.
United were beaten 3-1 by the Catalan giants and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was heavily criticised for leaving the Bulgarian out of his squad.
Goals
At 31 years of age Dimitar Berbatov is not the youngest or the quickest player in the world. However, Berbatov’s game has never been based on pace, it’s been based on his superb football intelligence. He is still capable of scoring goals at the top level of football.
If Berbatov does leave United then it will their loss and somebody else’s gain next season, as Dimitar Berbatov still has a lot to offer and his talent is wasted on the Manchester United bench. At £5million Berbatov could be a bargain buy for a team looking for a quality goalscorer.
Should Dimitar Berbatov move away from Manchester United this summer?
