Newcastle have been the team to follow in the Premier League recently if you want to see goals and Stoke have also joined in the fun of late.
Five of the Magpies’ last six league games have featured three or more goals, while two of Stoke’s last three PL fixtures have brought three or more.
There is a history of goals in matches between these two sides as well, with seven of their last nine encounters producing three or more.
The highlight was Newcastle’s 5-1 mauling of the Potters in the corresponding fixture last season, when Loic Remy (2), Yoan Gouffran, Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Demba Cisse were on target.
Remy and Cabaye have since left St James’ Park, but Gouffran and Cisse are still there – and Gouffran helped Newcastle to their first win under head coach John Carver last weekend, when they strolled to a 3-0 victory at relegation-threatened Hull.
The Potters were also among the goals last Saturday, when they trounced lowly QPR 3-1 at the Britannia Stadium, with Jon Walters notching the first hat-trick by a Stoke player in the top flight.
Those games left Stoke two points ahead of Newcastle in 10th place, but expect the Magpies to climb the table now that the uncertainty surrounding Carver’s position has been banished – until the summer anyway – following his appointment as head coach for the rest of the season.
That showed last weekend at Hull, where Newcastle could have scored more than three – and so could Stoke, who underlined why the Britannia Stadium is such a difficult place to visit.
Lifted by victories in two of their last three away league games – at Leicester and Everton – Mark Hughes’ side are now sure to be fired up for revenge in front of the Sky cameras on Sunday after last season’s St James’ slaughter.
